Day 6: Even our faith
What does Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and that faith was regarded as the basis of Abraham’s approval by God” (Romans 4:3 – God’s Word (GW) Translation – See also Genesis 15:6, Galatians 3:6, James 2:23).
Our Father, God of impeccable covenant, You are faithful and true (Psalm 33:4, Revelation 19:11). Your covenant is trustworthy (2 Samuel 7:28), for it is impossible for God to lie (Hebrews 6:18). You have given so many infallible assurances of who You are— so many proofs of Your character, Your word, Your might, Your power:
Nothing is too difficult for You (Jeremiah 32:17; impossible with You (Matthew 19:26, Mark 10:27, Luke 1:37); beyond the reach of Your power (Psalm 139:7-12, Romans 8:38-39). Your word never fails (1 Kings 8:56, Luke 1:37); never returns void, always accomplishes Your purpose (Isaiah 55:11).
All this Abraham believed when the word of the Lord came to him (Genesis 15:4): Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed... (Romans 4:18). And You credited his faith as righteousness (Romans 4:3, quoting Genesis 15:6).
Father, You have shown us that without faith, it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists, and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him (Hebrews 11:6). You have given us Your simple gospel of grace:
For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son (John 3:16-18).
And You have not left us unprotected against the aberrations and distortions of "a different gospel" (2 Corinthians 11:4, Galatians 1:6). You are the mighty God, and You have meticulously preserved Your message of hope, peace, and saving grace by faith through ages of ridicule, mockery, scorn, peril, danger, and sword.
You reveal in Your word what true faith looks like— Your word is a lamp for our feet, a light on our path (Psalm 119:105). Moreover, You gave us the Spirit of truth to protect us against "weeds among Your good seed" (Matthew 13:24-30), and against the constant stream of perversion, misrepresentation, and fallacy.
We take great comfort in the example of Abraham— imperfect, full of questions, full of consternation— yet believing (Genesis 15)— because You are God, and no word from God will ever fail (Luke 1:37). Help us to hold fast to Your promise, Everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith (1 John 5:4).
