Day 4: The word of truth

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a worker who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15 – NASB).

Sovereign Lord, You know all things, and You know that in this world, we desperately need truth, for without an anchor, we would be lost in a sea of chaos and confusion, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming (Ephesians 4:14).

So You, Lord Jesus— the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John14:6)— prayed to the Father for those who believed and who would believe in You: Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth (John 17:17).

You gave us the promise, And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth (John 14:16-17). You also left us instructions to safeguard ourselves against lies, deceit, treachery, and deception.

You direct us to put on the armor of God, which includes the belt of truth and the breastplate of righteousness (Ephesians 6:14). And You call us to study Your word with diligence, so that we can accurately handle the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15 - NASB).

Lord, help us to guard against the error of the Sadducees who based their knowledge on human authority. We take note of Your rebuke to them, “You are in error, because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God"  (Matthew 22:29).

You explained to Nicodemus, the Pharisee, that unlike human authority, Your authority has basis in full knowledge and evidence of heavenly realities that no one on earth but You could possibly possess, since You are the only One who has come from heaven (John 3:11-13).

As we look around us in our world, we see the havoc caused by lies, deceit, distortions, misinformation, disinformation, equivocation of every sort. We see the mess and the muddle, the hurt and the harm, the danger and the destruction; and we are reminded of Your warning that the father of lies... was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies he speaks his native language... (John 8:44).

You offer us the protection of Your truth from the thief [who] comes only to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10)— from the enemy of Your creation who prowls around like a roaring lion (1 Peter 5:8).

Deliver us, O Lord, from the unbelief that tethers us to the very lies that seek to devour our souls. Help us, even as we see parallels in the natural world, to recognize the same forces of deception at work in the spiritual realm.

God of mercy and grace, the thief comes to steal, kill and destroy. In the physical realm, and in the spiritual. But You have come to give us life— full, and abundant (John 10:10). Deliver us from evil. Sanctify us by the truth. Your word is truth.
