Day 5: King of the nations

God reigns over the nations; God is seated on His holy throne. The nobles of the nations assemble as the people of the God of Abraham, for the kings of the earth belong to God; He is greatly exalted (Psalm 47:8-9).

Our heavenly Father, You are the great God, the great King above all gods. (Psalm 95:3).

Long ago, Your ancient people, led by King David, pondered the incredible love and kindness You had shown to a tiny, powerless people who had no might, no power and no particular recommendation for Your grace (Deuteronomy 7:7). They prayed in humble gratitude:

“There is no one like You, Lord, and there is no God but You, as we have heard with our own ears. And who is like Your people Israel—the one nation on earth whose God went out to redeem a people for Himself…” (1 Chronicles 17:20-21).

And yet, they had not seen— had not comprehended the full scope of Your grace. They knew of Your promise: The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until He to whom it belongs shall come and the obedience of the nations shall be His (Genesis 49:10).

But they could not fathom the breathtaking scope of Your promised blessing for an entire broken humanity, a promise made even before Abraham— to a couple hiding in shame in a lost Paradise (Genesis 3:15). Even David, who himself was part of that kingly line to the promised Messiah little grasped the full magnificence of Your plan.

Our Lord would later explain to a Samaritan woman— an "outsider"— that although salvation is from the Jews, God had planned a time when every nation on earth would be invited into true worship of Almighty God (John 4:21-22).

Lord, even today, when we can clearly look back at the most significant events of human history— the birth, death and resurrection of the Savior of the world, we too, easily miss the stunning significance of God with us. We miss the height and breath, the depth and scope of Your infinite love, Your boundless mercy, Your amazing grace and Your all-encompassing promise of deliverance to a world groaning under the weight of its own sin and suffering.

This Advent season, grant us new vision and new understanding. Teach us to embrace with gratitude the precious gift of hope that is ours long after the celebrations are done.
