Day 7: For all generations
We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done (Psalm 78:4).
O Lord, You have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or You brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting You are God (Psalm 90:1-2).
You have called forth the generations from the beginning (Isaiah 41:4), and You have emphasized the importance of teaching each new generation to know the God who reigns for ever... for all generations (Psalm 146:10). It is Your desire that the generation of the upright... be blessed (Psalm 112:2)— that they be safe-guarded against the pitfalls of godlessness and rebellion, and their consequences (Psalm 78:8-37, 40:64).
The psalmist Asaph has taught Your people throughout the generations the importance of ensuring that the power and the grace and the mercy and the blessings of God are not buried and hidden in history:
My people, hear my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth with a parable; I will utter hidden things, things from of old—things we have heard and known, things our ancestors have told us. We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done.
He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which He commanded our ancestors to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget His deeds but would keep His commands (Psalm 78:1-7).
Father help us! Help our generations! We life in a world that reflects the truth in Your wise words of warning, Where there is no vision [revelation] the people perish [are unrestrained] but blessed [happy] is the one who heeds wisdom's instruction [keeps/obeys the law] (Proverbs 29:18).
Lord, there is no hope for our children, for a perishing world, for a world without vision, apart from You. Let this be our desperate prayer today, Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare Your power to the next generation, Your mighty acts to all who are to come. (Psalm 71:18).
