Day 6: Rain of gifts
You gave abundant showers, O God; You refreshed Your weary inheritance. Your people settled in it, and from Your bounty, God, You provided for the poor (Psalm 68:9-10).
The text of these two verses literally runs, A rain of gifts Thou shakest out, O God, on Thine inheritance, and when exhausted didst refresh it. Thy living creatures dwell therein; Thou makest provision of Thy goodness for the afflicted, O God.[i]
O Lord, from ancient times You have promised Your people, "I will never leave you nor forsake you" (Joshua 1:5, Hebrews 13:5).
In both a literal and symbolic demonstration of Your faithfulness, You have shown that You walk with Your people through the wilderness places of this life. You guide, protect, and defend them through every treacherous path and every weary step of the journey. And when they are exhausted You refresh them; You carry them on eagles' wings and bring them to Yourself (Exodus 19:4).
God of abundance, we thank You for Your refreshing rain of gifts— for the manna—the grain of heaven—the bread of angels You provide in ample measure and divine sufficiency so that according to Your economy and Your instructions, the one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little. Everyone had gathered just as much as they needed (Psalm 78:24-25, Exodus 16:18).
Most of all we thank You for the true bread from heaven— our Lord Jesus Christ (John 6:32), whose broken body was, and remains, sufficient for every hunger, every need, every longing of every sin-weary human soul.
Rain on us, O Lord! Refresh this dry and parched land where there is no water (Psalm 63:1). We desperately need Your abundant showers— Your springs and rivers of living water welling up to eternal life (John 4:14, 7:38-39).
