Day 7: Grace alone
Of the greatness of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over His kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this (Isaiah 9:7).
Our Father in heaven, from age to age You have shown Your compassion and mercy, righteousness and justice. You have unfailingly revealed Yourself in Your power, wisdom, and perfection: He is the Rock, His works are perfect, and all His ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is He (Deuteronomy 32:4).
Even as we live in the brokenness, fallenness, and imperfection of our world, we recognize—albeit through the haze of human perception— the standards and principles of perfection, justice, faithfulness, and righteousness, and we yearn for them; for You have set eternity in the human heart (Ecclesiastes 3:11).
And it is to You, the righteous Judge of all the earth that our hearts appeal, when we witness the evil, the corruption, the inequity and the injustice of this world. It is to You, the Ancient of Days who [pronounces] judgment (Daniel 7:22) that we cry out in our pain, bitterness, anger, or despair.
You hear those cries, O Lord, just as You heard the blood of slain Abel crying out to You from the ground (Genesis 4:10). And to every longing heart, every broken spirit, every bitter tear; to every cry of "Why?" or "How Long?", the promise of hope echoes through the ages:
For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6 - NKJV).
In Your perfect wisdom, faithful God, when the set time had fully come (Galatians 4:4), the Child came, just as You promised, to declare the Year of the Lord's Favor. And His mission remains to proclaim... the day of vengeance of our God (Isaiah 61:1-3). . But in this interim time of Your favor (2 Corinthians 6:2), You have promised that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved (Acts 2:21).
Lord Jesus, we pray that hearts may call on Your name and take hold of Your great gift of forgiveness in this the accepted time, the day of Your salvation. For we will not be able to stand on our own merit when You return to judge the world in righteousness and the peoples with equity (Psalm 98:9).
We look forward to Your unending government and peace, for righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne (Psalm 89:14). And in the confidence of Your grace and Your grace alone, we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for Himself a people that are His very own, eager to do what is good (Titus 2:13-14).
