Day 5: His compassions never fail

There may yet be hope

Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness (Lamentations 3:22-23).

Creator God, Everlasting Father, Ancient of Days, the earth is Yours and everything in it, the world and all who live in it; for You founded it on the seas and established it on the waters (Psalm 24:1-2). You are God who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of Your great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing (Isaiah 40:26).

You have set Your glory in the heavens (Psalm 8:1), and all creation testifies to the marvelous intricacies of Your grand design. But You did not set the world in motion and leave it on its own— it is in in You we live, and move, and have our being (Acts 17:28).

Only through You is all life sustained, for the Son [of God] is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful word (Hebrews 1:3). And You actively rule and reign over all: The plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purpose of His heart through all generations (Psalm 33:11).

Your plans are wise, and perfect, and good. But we, in the blindness of human folly— in our darkened understanding, in our separation from the life of God, in the ignorance born and bred in us from sin and rebellion against God (Ephesians 4:18)— we would be the authors of our own destruction apart from Your compassion.

But even in the dire consequences of human sin, You do not leave us to be swallowed up and overcome by the error of our ways, by the full outcome of our collective choices. Even in the suffering and the darkness, the anguish and the hardship, the chains and the crooked paths, the affliction and the wandering, the bitterness and the gall, we have [this] hope:

Because of Your great love, [mercy, lovingkindness], we are not consumed [completely wiped out], for Your compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness (Lamentations 3 - selected verses - various translations).

Thank You, kind Lord, good Lord, compassionate Lord, for Your great love and faithfulness. Thank You that You hear us when we cry out to You from the depths. Thank You that even in our despair You come near and whisper, "Do not fear" (Lamentations 3:55-57).
