Day 4: Foundation of Justice
But about the Son [God] says, “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of Your kingdom” (Hebrews 1:8).
Sovereign Lord, the heavens proclaim Your righteousness, for You are a God of justice (Psalm 50:6). About Yourself You have declared, "For I, the Lord, love justice..." (Isaiah 61:8); righteousness and justice are the [very] foundation of Your throne (Psalm 89:14, 97:2).
But throughout human history, Your justice has been ignored, and twisted, and perverted. For, as an unknown author* expressed in prayer:
Lord, when You are excluded from the hearts and consciences of men, the inevitable result is that people suffer, and Lord, there is much injustice and corruption taking place in our world today, not only in the lives of individuals but also in the corridors of power and the council rooms of many nations.
But not just today, Sovereign Lord. You have heard the cry of human hearts through centuries of injustice and repression, tyranny and oppression, enslavement and subjugation, abuse and exploitation, cruelty and persecution.
Yet You have assured us time and again that You do not leave the guilty unpunished (Exodus 34:7). The psalmist reminds us that the Lord is a God who avenges... as he too, pours out his prayers against injustice (Psalm 94:1-7) (see below):
The psalmist goes on to quickly dispel any notion that You turn a blind eye to corruption, tyranny, and injustice (Psalm 94:9-11).
And so, Lord, we look forward to the time when ultimate justice will be realized— the time when the scepter of justice will be the scepter of Your kingdom, when You will reign... establishing and upholding [Your kingdom] with justice and righteousness... forever (Isaiah 9:7).
But until then, we press into Your grace for help in the immediacy of the troubles and the struggles and the injustices of this world. We acknowledge that Your plans are flawless, and that You will answer in the now and in the after according to Your perfect wisdom. And in this assurance we offer to You the rest of the prayer of that unknown author*:
We pray Lord that You will right all the wrongs that are taking place in our world and vindicate those that are being treated unjustly. Keep us Father from trying to take matters into our own hands for vengeance is [Yours] and You will repay -
But Lord in your grace and mercy we pray that You would give justice and peace to all those that have been cruelly and unfairly treated by their fellow man and may injustice and carelessness that they have had to endure be the means to draw them into Your saving arms of grace -
We ask this in the precious name of the Lord, Jesus.
