Day 3: Faithful and true
God is not human, that He should lie, not a human being, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and then not act? Does He promise and not fulfill? (Numbers 23:19).
O Lord our God, even as we praise You, we are so aware of the limitations of our human views and frames in describing Your attributes, Your character, Your Being. Like the psalmists of Scripture, we can only acknowledge how inadequate are our references, our comparisons, our language.
How do we describe Your faithfulness—Your unerring, unchanging truth, steadfastness, and reliability— when all we know, all we have known— is change and decay? The psalmist David tried to express it in spatial language: Your faithfulness reaches to the skies (Psalm 108:4). And Ethan the Ezrahite admitted the difficulty of any comparison: Who is like You, Lord God Almighty? You, Lord, are mighty, and Your faithfulness surrounds You (Psalm 89:8).
But the circumstances of life, the uncertainty of our times, and the fickleness and flaws of human nature tempt us to doubt, or cause us to miss the supreme trustworthiness of a mighty God who does not change like shifting shadows (James 1:17). Yet, the Holy Spirit inspired words of Scripture remind us that those who know You trust You (Psalm 9:10).
Almighty God, faithful and true, around us there is much shifting and shaking, moving and upheaving, doubting and fearing. Help us to know You— to trust You, to trace Your faithfulness even in the ups and downs, in the maze, in the chaos, in the confusion of this world. Help us to rely on Your constancy, Your trustworthiness, Your wisdom, and Your goodness. Help us to be able to say with confidence:
I will proclaim the name of the Lord. Oh, praise the greatness of our God! He is the Rock, His works are perfect, and all His ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is He (Deuteronomy 32:3-4).
