Day 5: The One I trust
Yet this is no cause for shame, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day (2 Timothy 1:12).
Sovereign Lord, Creator, Ruler, Sustainer of all, nothing or no one can grasp— much less attain— the measure of Your might and stature. You alone are God without equal, without comparison:
Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand, or with the breadth of His hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance? Who can fathom the Spirit of the Lord, or instruct the Lord as His counselor? Whom did the Lord consult to enlighten Him, and who taught Him the right way? Who was it that taught Him knowledge, or showed Him the path of understanding? (Isaiah 40:12-14).
This reality of who You are is the context from which You challenge our tendency to fear mere mortals, human beings who are but grass... (Isaiah 51:12)— and our readiness to adopt the viewpoints, the perspectives, the conspiracies, the fears and the dreads of those around us: The Lord Almighty is the One you are to regard as holy, He is the One you are to fear, He is the One you are to dread (Isaiah 8:12-13).
Lord, Your ways and Your thoughts are massively above the ways and the thoughts of mortals (Isaiah 55:8-9). You have offered us Your saving grace, but it is ridiculed and rejected by a lost humanity that continues to embrace the Barabbas choices of rebellion, insurrection, chaos, confusion, death, and destruction (Mark 15:6-15)— in the natural, and in the spiritual. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing (1 Corinthians 1:18).
The apostle Paul wrote regarding God's wisdom, None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory (1 Corinthians 2:8). Yet, to those who are being saved, [the message of the cross] is the power of God (1 Corinthians 1:18).
Thus, Paul had the confidence to say, "I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes... (Romans1:16). And in the middle of mockery, ridicule, hostility, suffering— in the middle of false prophets and strange teachings (Hebrews 13:9)— deceiving spirits and things taught by demons (1 Timothy 4:1), Paul encourages believers everywhere to hold on to Christ, the power of God and the wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24).
We are grateful Lord, for this encouragement in these times. Enable us to hold on to our confidence, to persevere (Hebrews 10:35-36), and to say in our hearts, as Paul did, I know the One in whom I have put my trust, and I am sure that He is able to guard until that day what I have entrusted to Him (2 Timothy 1:12 - NRSVCE).
