Day 5: In the gateways of the morning and the evening
From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised (Psalm 113:3).
"Lord, our Lord," we pray with the psalmist, David, "how majestic is Your name in all the earth! You have, [indeed,] set Your glory in the heavens (Psalm 8:1).
It is in contemplating the beauty, the majesty and the breath-taking wonder of Your creation that we are often stirred to respond with spontaneous gratitude and praise: The whole earth is filled with awe at Your wonders; where morning dawns, where evening fades, You call forth songs of joy (Psalm 65:8).
Not only did You design, and create, and set in motion, a marvelous and intricate universe, but You show us that all Your works are according to Your perfect purpose and divine intention— nothing is haphazard, nothing came about through happenstance:
Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of His great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing (Isaiah 40:26).
And in the power and might, wisdom and will— in the mystery of the One, yet Triune, self-existent God, the "I AM WHO I AM"(Exodus 3:14)— it is the eternal Son of God who sustains, and maintains, and renews, and replenishes, and regulates, and perpetuates the circle and the rhythms of life and existence:
The Son is the image of the invisible God…In Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together (Colossians 1:15-17).
The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful word (Hebrews 1:3).
And in the rhythm, the constancy, and the daily wonder of the rising and the setting sun (Psalm 19:4-6), we join the praise of nature as You make the gateways of the morning and the evening shout for joy (Psalm 65:8 - NRSVUE).
