Day 7: Mindful regard
When I consider Your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place, what is mankind that You are mindful of them, human beings that You care for them? (Psalm 8:3-4).
God of creation, Lord our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth! (Psalm 8:1, 9). You have set Your glory in the heavens... [these] heavens declare Your glory, and the skies proclaim the work of Your hands (Psalm 8:1, 19:1).
Our minds can scarcely grasp the work of Your fingers— the mind-bending galaxies, the breath-taking lights, the inscrutable shadows, the deep, impenetrable darkness, the complex, intricate celestial bodies, and the mysterious pathways into unknown worlds. And yet, as Job declared in contemplating the marvels of Your creation, But these are only hints of His power, only the whispers that we have heard. Who can know how truly great God is? (Job 26:14 - GNT).
The psalmist David, too, contemplated the splendor, majesty, and glory of the heavens, and wondered at Your mindful regard of humanity and the elevation and preferment You have so graciously granted:
You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. You made them rulers over the works of Your hands; You put everything under their feet: all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas (Psalm 8:5-8).
God Almighty, You are the Creator, we are the created— a part of the work of Your fingers. Yet You fashioned us in Your own image and likeness, and breathed Your very breath into us (Genesis 1:27, 2:7). Help us to grasp Your singular, amazing esteem with gratitude and humility.
The wisdom of Your word teaches us, the arrogant cannot stand in Your presence (Psalm 5:5). Give us hearts of wonderment and worship that bow before You and exclaim, "What are human beings that You are mindful of them, mortals that You care for them?" Lord, majestic Lord, "What is This?"
