Day 7: My soul thirsts for my God

I provide water in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to My people, My chosen, the people I formed for Myself that they may proclaim My praise (Isaiah 43:20-21).

dry, barren, rocky desert

O God, You are my God;

I earnestly search for You.

My soul thirsts for You;

my whole body longs for You

in this parched and weary land

where there is no water.

I have seen You in Your sanctuary

and gazed upon Your power and glory.

Your unfailing love is better than life itself;

how I praise You!

I will praise You as long as I live,

lifting up my hands to You in prayer.

You satisfy me more than the richest feast.

I will praise You with songs of joy.

I lie awake thinking of You,

meditating on You through the night.

Because You are my helper,

I sing for joy in the shadow of Your wings.

I cling to You;

Your strong right hand holds me securely.

—Psalm 63:1-8 - NLT

…The fugitive poet confess[es] his allegiance to the only living God; and firm faith enables him to claim Him as his own. He has no doubts about his possession of his God; and why should other believers have any?

The straightforward, clear language of this opening sentence would be far more becoming in Christians than the timorous and doubtful expressions so usual among [those who profess faith in God]. How sweet is such language! Is there any other word comparable to it for delights? Meus Deus (My God). Can angels say more?

~ The Treasury of David

Great God, indulge my heartfelt claim:

be now my hope, my joy, my rest;

the glories that compose Your name

shall all engage to make me blest.

O great and good, O just and wise,

my Father, my all-loving God!

And I am Yours by sacred ties;

an heir, a servant of Your word.

With heart, and eyes, and lifted hands,

I long for You, to You I look,

as travelers, in earth’s thirsty lands,

yearn for a cooling water-brook.

With eager feet I would appear

among Your saints, to seek Your face;

for I have seen Your glory there,

and felt the power of sovereign grace.

Amid the wakeful hours of night,

when busy cares afflict my head,

one thought of You gives new delight,

and adds great comfort to my bed.

I'll lift my hands, I'll raise my voice,

while I have breath to pray or praise;

this work shall make my heart rejoice

for all the hours of all my days.
