Day 7: The perfect law of freedom
But the one who looks intently into the perfect law of freedom and perseveres in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer...—this person will be blessed in what he does (James 1:25 – Christian Standard Bible – CSB).
O Lord, Your ways are truly not our ways! Often Your ways seem strange to us, and we question, doubt, and resist. And yet, You are a compassionate Father who instructs us for our protection, our help, our good.
"I will walk about in freedom," the psalmist said, "for I have sought out Your precepts" (Psalm 119:45). The apostle James, too, describes the freedom of Your perfect law (James 1:25).
Father, You have shown us in Your enduring word, the history of human rebellion against God— our foolish choosing of a cunning deceiver over the truth of God (Genesis 3:1-6). And in our rejection of Your just and righteous rule we chose an alternative of thorns and thistles (Genesis 3:18), and of enslavement to the father of lies (John 8:44).
We need only look at the worst inclinations of our hearts, and at the scale of evil and wrong in this world to know that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). We need only listen to the whole creation... groaning in its bondage to decay, and to feel our own inward groans (Romans 8:21-22) to know that all You have told us is true.
But You invite us to look intently into the perfect law of freedom— into the face of the One who did not come to abolish the Law... but to fulfill [it] (Matthew 5:17). For through Christ Jesus the law of the life-giving Spirit has set [us] free from the law of sin and death (Romans 8:2).
O Father, help us to choose Your perfect law, Your flawless word— true, unfailing, and enduring. Help us to choose its wise and protective defenses against the thief who continues to steal and kill and destroy (John 10:10).
As we see the increasing chaos and confusion in human systems, processes, and institutions, help us to recognize what You have shown us in Your word— the spiritual reality of a heinous enemy of our soul, weaving malevolence and evil intent through human agency.
Often in our natural world we marvel at the blindness and delusion that enable evil by inability or refusal to recognize it. Yet in Your word, we see an even greater danger of being deceived and deluded by the god of this age [who] has blinded the minds of unbelievers so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ... (2 Corinthians 4:4).
Open our eyes, Almighty God to see the repeated marks and patterns of the ancient serpent (Revelation12:9), traceable from the beginning of time. And even as we struggle with the horrors of his deception, manipulation, and destruction, open our minds to understand the parallels in the spiritual, and to grasp their greater importance.
So that we may fix our eyes on the Deliverer You sent us, and find freedom, hope, and shelter in Him.
