Day 6: Under His wings
He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge (Psalm 91:4).
Lord of all, what comfort, what reassurance we find in Your faithfulness, Your constancy, Your watchfulness, and Your tender care! What comfort we find in the blessed assurance, The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in Him... (Nahum 1:7).
We remember Your words to Your people: I cared for you in the wilderness, in the land of burning heat (Hosea 13:5). You are still God, and for us, as for them, You are a shelter from the scorching wilderness places of life—from drought, famine, or storm.
You alone, O Lord, understand the lonely and desolate passes on our journey—the places of aching and yearning, wrestling, and weariness. You alone can follow where no human can, and find us in the deepest chasms.
We pray today for those who are walking lonely roads of longing, lonely roads of exclusion, lonely roads of obedience, lonely roads of trial, lonely roads of sickness, lonely roads of grief— so many other lonely roads. Sometimes others want to come alongside, but they cannot. Sometimes they are not even aware. And sometimes they do not understand. But You understand (Jeremiah 15:15).
Father, teach us to wait in hope for the Lord (Psalm 33:20). Renew our strength—safeguard us from fatigue, burnout, and discouragement. When we have no might, increase our endurance. When we feel that [our] cause is disregarded by [our] God (Isaiah 40:27), remind us that You are for us (Romans 8:31). When we feel like fear is on every side (Psalm 31:13), strengthen our heart, and fill us with courage.
O Lord, You see past the obstacles we encounter. You make our feet like the feet of a deer (Habakkuk 3:19); You enable us to be nimble and agile even when pebbles rain down, when rocks shift under our feet—when boulders are dislodged. And You carry us when the terrain is too difficult or treacherous.
Help us to trust that Your way is perfect. Drive away discouragement from weary, troubled souls. Expose the lies of abandonment and hopelessness. Give us the hope [that] does not put us to shame (Romans 5:5). Help us to know that Your wings cover us wherever we are—that You hold [us] by [our] right hand (Psalm 73:23).
