Daily Affirmations - Day 6 - Our God Can: Light in the dark

Writer: Alisa B.Alisa B.

Day 6: Light in the dark

"How can we know the way?" (John 14:5).

Heavenly Father, in the "vast array" of the heavens and the earth You have created (Genesis 2:1), we are mere specks of dust (Psalm 103:14); a temporary vanishing mist (James 4:14). But yet You are mindful of us (Psalm 8:3-4).

Without You, Lord, we would be completely lost in the overwhelming immenseness of a world with so many elements we cannot measure, cannot grasp, cannot control. The wise Teacher reminds us, "...then I saw all that God has done. No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all their efforts to search it out, no one can discover its meaning. Even if the wise claim they know, they cannot really comprehend it" (Ecclesiastes 8:17).

As we seek to sift through it all, we wonder like the apostle Thomas, "How can we know the way?" (John 14:5). But all through the centuries, the response of the Lord Jesus blazes into every dark corner of human existence with light eternal: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6).

Long ago, Lord, You issued an invitation, Let the one who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the Lord and rely on their God (Isaiah 50:10). Be our way, be our light, be our guide. Every moment of every day we step forward into a future we do not know, but we cling to Your promise from of old, I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with My loving eye on you (Psalm 32:8).

Lord God, You have given us Your truth, shown us Your wisdom, offered us Your guidance. Help us not to choose instead to stumble along in unbelief. We clearly see that the structures and supports of this world that tout promise cannot deliver— teach us to know that our God can.

Teach us to embrace Your guidance and Your help. Deliver us from the pitfalls and dark paths around us— self-determined paths that lead to shattering and total collapse (Isaiah 30:13-14). Remind us of the age-old message of our unchanging God, The Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore He will rise up to show you compassion (Isaiah 30:18).
