Day 6: Who can fathom?

What if some were unfaithful? Will their unfaithfulness nullify God’s faithfulness? Not at all! Let God be true, and every human being a liar. As it is written: “So that You may be proved right when You speak and prevail when You judge” (Romans 3:3-4 quoting Psalm 51:4).

God of promise, God of covenant, Your love... reaches to the heavens, Your faithfulness to the skies (Psalm 36:5; 57:10; 108:4). You are a God of flawless, enduring, unfailing truth (Psalm 18:30;1 Peter 1:25; Luke 1:37).

And You are God of perfect wisdom— Your wisdom is as far above human thought and human wisdom as the measureless expanse between heaven and earth (Isaiah 55:8-9). Those who try to grasp its overwhelming magnitude can only cry out in awe:

Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable His judgments, and His paths beyond tracing out! (Romans 11:33).

Sovereign Lord, Your attributes and Your character— love, faithfulness, truth, wisdom, to name a few— do not depend on human response, on human belief, on human endorsement, on human approval: Who can fathom the Spirit of the Lord, or instruct the Lord as His counselor (Isaiah 40:13)?

The rebellion, doubt, disobedience, or unfaithfulness of mortals have never negated Your word—have never nullified Your faithfulness. You remain faithful in the dearth of truth—in the moral swamp of lies, deceit, and deception that have followed humans since the moment they chose "the father of lies" over the "Faithful and True."

You were still faithful even when the guilty pair in the garden home You created invited death and decay into its perfection, then blamed each other, blamed God, and made excuses for their doubt, disobedience and rebellion (Genesis 3:1-13).

You were still faithful when time and again, Your people rejected their covenant God, turned from Your instructions, and met with disaster.

You were still faithful when Your Messiah was despised and rejected (Isaiah 53:3)—when humans chose a murderous insurrectionist over the Lord of glory, and crucified Him on a Roman cross (Mark 15:6-15, 1 Corinthians 2:8).

And You are still faithful, God of love, even as humanity continues to mock, scorn, ridicule, disdain, and ignore Your grace. You still offer now [as] the time of Your favor (2 Corinthians 6:2)—the time of hope, deliverance, and rescue through the costly sacrifice of Your Son Jesus:

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. (John 3:16).

Your faithfulness continues apart from our choice in response, “So that You may be proved right when You speak and prevail when You judge” (Psalm 51:4):

Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. (John 3:17-18).

May we choose life, our God of mercy and grace.
