Day 3: Things planned long ago
Lord, You are my God; I will exalt You and praise Your name, for in perfect faithfulness You have done wonderful things, things planned long ago (Isaiah 25:1).
Omnipotent God, You are not confined by time and space; these are but mere elements of Your creation. Neither the best, nor the worst of human choices can cause disruption to Your sovereign will: For the Lord Almighty has purposed, and who can thwart Him? His hand is stretched out, and who can turn it back? (Isaiah 14:27).
Throughout the history of Your ancient people, You proved Yourself their Sovereign God, by showing them things planned long ago. You demonstrated Your undisputable power—evidenced by Your documented word, distinguishable from any other power, any "god", any idol:
"I, the Lord, speak the truth; I declare what is right… Who foretold this long ago, who declared it from the distant past? Was it not I, the Lord? And there is no God apart from Me, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none but Me" (Isaiah 45:19,21).
Faithful God, it was Your infallible word that the apostles quoted, when in prayer they showed that even the most evil conspiracy in human history—the plot by earthly powers and people to cruelly execute Your anointed One Jesus—was what Your power and will had decided beforehand should happen (Acts 4:28).
And Sovereign God, it is in Your infallible word we too trust as we marvel at the unmistakable unfolding of Your omnipotent, divine, design. For throughout human history You have continued to validate the truth of Your message by declaring it in advance from the distant past.
You alone are God—You alone know the full details of all You have ordained. But in Your mercy, You have not left us uninformed. You have shown us in Your word—just as You showed Your ancient people; just as You showed the apostles—the evidence of Your sovereign hand in all that exists.
And even as we wrestle with the cumulative and cascading consequences of evil choices by earthly powers and people—greed, corruption, political tensions, violence, war—Your word reminds us of Your supreme power.
Almighty Father, help us to know that when famine, fires, climate disasters, and cataclysmic events can be traced directly, latterly, or cumulatively to the sinful, selfish choices of humans, or when they are part of the age-old groaning of creation (Romans 8:22), You know all outcomes before they happen, and You make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come (Isaiah 46:10). So that we may know that You are God.
Lord, no one knows Your divine timetable, but You have told believers of every place and time to "keep watch" for the end of the age (Matthew 24:3,42). And whether it be near or still far off, we are grateful that, as we see the darkness deepening around us, the unfolding of Your word gives light (Psalm 119:130)
Help us to trust You, faithful God, to believe Your word, confident that nothing is outside what Your power and will...decided beforehand should happen. In You, all paradoxes are resolved, as You direct all things to what You have purposed.
