Day 6: New strength to fainting souls

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day (Psalm 46:4-5).

gentle stream

God is our refuge and strength,

an ever-present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way

and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,

though its waters roar and foam

and the mountains quake with their surging.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,

the holy place where the Most High dwells.

God is within her, she will not fall;

God will help her at break of day.

Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;

He lifts his voice, the earth melts.

The Lord Almighty is with us;

the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Psalm 46:1-7

Lord God, our refuge and strength, thank You for Your faithful, trustworthy, and enduring word. Your promises ground us, secure us, and comfort us. In these days full of trouble, uproar, and chaos, lift us above the noise and the fray. Still us with Your holy word.

How happy then are we,

Who build, O Lord, on Thee!

What can our foundation shock?

Though the shattered earth remove,

Stands our city on a rock,

On the rock of heavenly love.

~ Charles Wesley

There is a stream whose gentle flow

Supplies the city of our God;

Life, love, and joy, still gliding through,

And watering our divine abode.

That sacred stream, Thy holy word,

Supports our faith, our fear controls;

Sweet peace Thy promises afford,

And give new strength to fainting souls.

~ Isaac Watts

When all things are excited to fury, and reveal their utmost power to disturb, faith smiles serenely. She is not afraid of noise, nor even of real force, she knows that the Lord stills the raging of the sea, and holds the waves in the hollow of His hand...

Alps and Andes may tremble, but faith rests on a firmer basis, and is not to be moved by swelling seas. Evil may ferment, wrath may boil, and pride may foam, but the brave heart of holy confidence trembles not.

Great men who are like mountains may quake for fear in times of great calamity, but the one whose trust is in God needs never to be dismayed.

~ The Treasury of David (slightly edited).
