Day 5: Good news
How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “Your God reigns!” (Isaiah 52:7).
God our Father, Ancient of Days, You are from everlasting to everlasting. Your words are enduring, for You have spoken Your eternal truth into all that was, all that is, all that ever will be.
From the very beginning, You have directed Your love and grace towards the ones You created in Your image and gifted with the breath of life. And in every age and season, You have appointed prophets, heralds, and apostles to bring Your timeless message of life, freedom, hope, and compassion to all humanity, often speaking at once into the present and times to come.
Only You, Sovereign Lord— the One who declared “I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please’” (Isaiah 46:10)— can so masterfully weave the varied threads of history into the cohesive story of Your love and justice, mercy, and compassion.
You proclaimed release for Your ancient people held in captivity in Babylon even as You declared freedom from symbolic "Babylon" for all people through Your Messiah (Isaiah 52:7, Romans 10:13-15). And in Him, the fullness of the Deity came to us in bodily form with a clearly expressed mission:
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent Me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair (Isaiah 61:1-3 - See also Luke 4:16-21).
All around us, Sovereign Lord, the whirlpools of evil, violence, chaos, and turmoil threaten to engulf us in negative reports, dooming forecasts, and distressing news. But the voice of Your messengers still goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world (Psalm 19:4).
The rocks and ridges, cliffs and crags, peaks and precipices of every mountain still echo the good news: in a world that longs for peace, You Yourself are our peace; in a world in despair, You are our hope; in a world rudderless, and without mooring, You are our anchor. And Your heralds still run swiftly on beautiful feet with the joyful message, "Your God reigns!"
