Day 3: The Comforter has come

"Comfort, Comfort My people," says your God (Isaiah 40:1).

Lord our God, You are the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness (Psalm 86:15). You are the Father of compassion, the God of all comfort (2 Corinthians 1:3).

You, Lord, know more than we ever can, the troubles of this life, for nothing in all creation is hidden from Your sight (Hebrews 4:13). And You have not hidden from us the stark reality of the human journey— You have shown us through Your word the dire consequences of sin on all creation.

Lord Jesus You told Your disciples, In this world, you will have trouble (John 16:33). But You left us with the promise, I will not leave you as orphans, I will come to you... The Advocate [Comforter, Helper, Intercessor, Counselor, Strengthener, the One who stands alongside]the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you (John 14:18, 26).

And with the presence of Your promised Holy Spirit comes a special gift of peace: "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid" (John 14:27).

Lord our God, in these days of turmoil and trouble, we are grateful for Your message of comfort— the message You have spoken tenderly to Your people in other ages, the message that the end of the struggle will come (Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11). Until then, help us every step of the way, for You have promised to be with us to the end.

Lord, we give You our anxieties, our cares, our burdens, our disquiet, our ruffled spirits. Strengthen our hearts, our faith, our resolve, our dependence on the Spirit of God: Teacher, Counselor, and Guide. Our faithful Comforter.

Oh, spread the tidings ’round, wherever man is found,

Wherever human hearts and human woes abound;

Let every Christian tongue proclaim the joyful sound:

The Comforter has come!

Refrain:

The Comforter has come, the Comforter has come!

The Holy Ghost from Heav’n, the Father’s promise giv’n;

Oh, spread the tidings ’round, wherever man is found—

The Comforter has come!

The long, long night is past, the morning breaks at last,

And hushed the dreadful wail and fury of the blast,

As o’er the golden hills the day advances fast!

The Comforter has come!

Lo, the great King of kings, with healing in His wings,

To every captive soul a full deliv’rance brings;

And through the vacant cells the song of triumph rings;

The Comforter has come!

O boundless love divine! How shall this tongue of mine

To wond’ring mortals tell the matchless grace divine—

That I, a child of hell, should in His image shine!

The Comforter has come!

Sing till the echoes fly above the vaulted sky,

And all the saints above to all below reply,

In strains of endless love, the song that ne’er will die:

The Comforter has come!
