Day 5: True Worship

The Lord says: “These people come near to Me with their mouth and honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. Their worship of Me is based on merely human rules they have been taught” (Isaiah 29:13).

Our Father in heaven, Your name is holy, hallowed, set apart— heavenly beings worship round Your throne, reverently, unceasingly. But we, covered in earth's dust, earth's corruption, do not rightly know how to approach Your glory, Your splendor, Your majesty, Your holiness.

Yet, it is You Yourself who invites us to come, who promises grace and mercy, and an audience (Hebrews 4:16). But You do not want us to come carelessly, mindlessly, trampling... Your courts (Isaiah 1:12).

From the earliest, You taught Your people to distinguish between the holy and the common, between the clean and the unclean, so they would not profane Your holy things and dishonor You (Leviticus 10:10, Ezekiel 22:26). The Lord Jesus continued this distinction when He taught us that God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in Spirit and in truth (John 4:24 - ESV).

Teach us, O Lord, how to be the kind of worshipers the Father seeks (John 4:23). We fall far short. Touch us with Your cleansing fire, so that like Isaiah, we behold Your overwhelming glory and the amazing grace that meets us in our ruined mortality (Isaiah 6:1-7).

Teach us most of all to come, not with [traditions learned by rote] - (AMP) and rules taught by humans (Isaiah 29:13), but with the true spirit of worship that honors the teaching You Yourself taught and took care to restate and emphasize for us:

One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked Him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?”

“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is One. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these” (Mark 12:28-31).
