Day 3: Freely give
This is what the Lord says: “... Let no foreigner who is bound to the Lord say, “The Lord will surely exclude me from His people... My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations" (Isaiah 56:3, 7).
Sovereign Lord, our Father in heaven, You designed Your salvation plan for the whole world from ages past. You showed us in prophecy the suffering of Your Messiah (Psalm 22), and revealed His goal to purchase for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation (Revelation 5:9).
And ultimately, as You had promised Abraham, all nations of the earth would be blessed through Him (Genesis 26:4): All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations will bow down before Him, for dominion belongs to the Lord and He rules over the nations (Psalm 22:27-28).
Lord, You know the human heart, and You knew that because You had chosen and set apart one people to steward Your great plan, the temptation to pride and prejudice could distract them from, and blind them to, Your saving grace for all peoples. And so You constantly showed them Your great love for the far away as well as for the near (Ephesians 2:17).
In our day, our Father, keep us from the same temptations to pride and prejudice— from a faith based on false hierarchies and worldly structures. Remove from our hearts the foolish, self-deluding vanity and pride that would disparage others—that would speak their name, their religion, their background, with a sneer— that would brand them as undeserving, as unworthy, as outsiders (Isaiah 56:3).
Let us help, not hinder Your work of [gathering] still others... besides those already gathered (Isaiah 56:8). Remind us of the great love— the amazing grace You have shown us in our own unworthiness (Ephesians 2:8). Remind us of our Savior's words, "Freely you have received; freely give" (Matthew 10:8).
