Day 4: The shelter of the Most High
Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust” (Psalm 91:1-2).

Our Father in heaven, among the details You gave to Moses for the pattern of Your tabernacle were the specifications for the inner place of Your Presence:
...Make two cherubim out of hammered gold at the ends of the cover. Make one cherub on one end and the second cherub on the other.... The cherubim are to have their wings spread upward, overshadowing the cover with them. The cherubim are to face each other, looking toward the cover... There, above the cover between the two cherubim that are over the ark of the covenant law, I will meet with you... (Exodus 25:18-20,22).
Lord, You gave us this beautiful picture of Your wings of refuge stretched out over humanity in Your Most Holy Place. But this Holy of Holies was separated from even the Holy Place by a curtain (Exodus 26:33), and access was not widespread and free, for the way into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed in its full power, glory, and perfection (Hebrews 9:6-9, 11, 14).
But You had begun to unfold Your amazing plan for God's dwelling place [to be] among the people (Revelation 21:3). All that came before were a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however is found in [the Lord Jesus] Christ (Colossians 2:17).
At the right time, You sent Him to be "God with us" (Isaiah 7:14, Matthew 1:23). He came with a mission to die in our place for our transgressions against You (Isaiah 53:4-6), so that we could live in the shelter of the Most High.
When He was crucified, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom (Mark 15:38). His ultimate sacrifice gives us confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, His body (Hebrews 10:19-20).
And now, in a deeper, richer, sense, we can understand the words of the psalmist in Psalm 91. For though we enjoy, and are grateful for the protections You grant us in the physical realm, You offer us an even greater protection— a refuge from the roaring, devouring lion (1 Peter 5:8), the ancient serpent (Revelation 12:9, 20:2), who desires to destroy our souls.
In light of the ultimate rescue You provided through the Lord Jesus Christ, we embrace Your promise, You will tread on the lion and the cobra; You will trample the great lion and the serpent (Psalm 91:13).
Eternal God, You are our refuge and underneath are the everlasting arms (Deuteronomy 33:27). Expand our vision. Help us see beyond the horizons of this short, transient span, so we can pray, not just for this life, but for the one to come: I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings (Psalm 61:4).
