Day 4: So gently sustaineth
Are five sparrows not sold for two assaria (Roman copper coin)? And yet not one of them has gone unnoticed in the sight of God. But even the hairs of your head are all counted. Do not fear; you are more valuable than a great number of sparrows (Luke 12:6-7 - NASB).
Praise to You, O Lord, Almighty who o'er all things so wondrously reigneth. You shelter us under Your wings, yea, so gently sustaineth!*
Over and over again You have proven that The Lord's acts of mercy indeed do not end, For His compassions do not fail. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness (Lamentations 3:22-23 - NASB). But still we falter and we fret, we wrestle and we worry.
Yet You are patient with us, mindful that we are dust (Psalm 103:14). You know that we are naturally inclined to the sights, the sounds, and the sensibilities of earth— to the groaning of creation, to the barbs of thorns and thistles, to the weight of sin, to the tremble of fear.
And so You tell us, "Stop being afraid!" (Luke 12:7). You reassure us, that in a world focused on trade and transaction, where loyalty and integrity are traded for pieces of silver and souls are bartered for fool's gold, You value even the hairs on our head.
Forgive our little faith. Forgive our little trust. Forgive the insidious pride that clings to the illusion of control, and rebels against the wisdom and authority of God. Help us to trust You— what You say, what You promise, what You purpose, what You ordain— even when our human minds do not understand.
Heavenly Father, You who care about the little birds, our life, our times are in Your hands. In all the anxiety-causing messages clamoring to be heard, may our one question, our one focus always be, "Now what do You say?" Keep us from the yawning pits of despair and anxiety all around us as we remember Your promise, "You are of more value than many sparrows" (Luke 12:7).
