Day 3: Shielded with favor

My shield is God Most High who saves the upright in heart

Surely, Lord, You bless the righteous; You surround them with Your favor as with a shield (Psalm 5:12).

Our Father in heaven, we could never presume to call ourselves righteous before a holy God, but You have so called us by the righteousness... given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe (Romans 3:22).

You have continued the love You declared through covenant promise to Your ancient people: "I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles... (Isaiah 42:6). You call us holy, and dearly loved (Colossians 3:12), and You assure us that we are shielded with Your favor (Psalm 5:12).

In this world, we live among those who hate peace (Psalm 120:6); we live among systems and structures of impurity and corruption (Isaiah 6:5). We live under constant threat of the fiery darts of the wicked— the flaming arrows of the evil one (Ephesians 6:16 - KJV, NIV). But the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does He withhold from those whose walk is blameless (Psalm 84:11).

For all the countless ways You shield us with Your favor, today, Lord, we thank You. Thank You for favor in our homes, our families, our occupations, our activities, our relationships and our communities; in our very existence.

Thank You for the favor of protection, the favor of provision, the favor of friendship, the favor of forgiveness. Thank You for the vast sum of Your precious thoughts that outnumber the grains of sand (Psalm 139:17-18).

We pray in the words and the example of Moses, the man of God:

If You are pleased with me, teach me Your ways so I may know You and continue to find favor with You (Exodus 33:13).

May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us— yes, establish the work of our hands (Psalm 90:17).
