Day 3: All His benefits
The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love... He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities (Psalm 103:8,10).
O Lord, You are the high and holy God; yet we have the incredible privilege of calling You Father, for You are the Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness... (Exodus 34:6).
Of all that You are—Your power, Your might, Your sovereignty, Your wisdom, and all the other innumerable attributes of Your Being, this is the way You chose to reveal Yourself to Moses when he beseeched You, Teach me Your ways so I may know You and continue to find favor with You... show me Your glory (Exodus 33:13, 18).
Exalted God, because of Your great compassion we too, dare prevail on Your mercy and grace, and ask You to teach us Your ways, and to show us Your glory, so that, like Moses we may bow to the ground at once and worship (Exodus 34:8). So that, like Isaiah, we are forced to cry out, “Woe is me!” For I am lost [ruined] [undone]; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips…” (Isaiah 6:5 - ESV).
Open our eyes, Lord, for when we see You, the King, the Lord of Hosts, in Your holiness, splendor, and majesty, we grasp our sinful human plight, and understand the depth of Your love and compassion. Only then can we truly apprehend Your great mercy— mercy that does not treat us as our sins deserve, and grace—grace that surrounds us with numberless unmerited benefits.
And only then can we pray with wonderment and gratitude: Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise Hs holy name. Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all His benefits— who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s....
Praise the Lord my soul (Psalm 103:1-5,22).
