Day 3: Listen to Him!
While [Peter] was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is My Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased. Listen to Him!” (Matthew 17:5).
Lord Jesus, You taught Your disciples to pray, "Our Father, hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven..." (Matthew 6:9-10). But for them, and for us, there are deeper lessons than words. Teach us, as You taught them, the heart posture and the attitude of prayer.
Incredibly, Lord, You invite us to come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16 -NKJV). We are given the reason for this gracious invitation: We do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come... (vs.15).
Lord, boldly indeed we come, but may our boldness not trample on Your grace, blind us to Your holiness, make light of Your majesty, dishonor Your glory. May our boldness not outstrip our reverence and our awe.
Too often we come, like the disciples on the mountain, lost in our own preoccupations, designing our own solutions, proposing our own agendas (Matthew 17:4). But You show us that prayer is not about many words, not about incessant babbling, dictating answers, prescribing remedies (Matthew 6:7).
We thank You that You know our needs (Matthew 6:8), care about our needs (Luke 12:6-7), invite us to bring our needs. And we thank You that You delight to give us good gifts (Matthew 7:7-11, Hebrews 4:15-16).
But teach our hearts to make You the center of our prayers, to desire the Giver more than the gifts; to long for You, to see You in the sanctuary and behold Your power and Your glory (Psalm 63:1-2). Teach our hearts to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord, and to seek Him in His temple (Psalm 27:4)— to listen to Him (Matthew 17:5), and to ask, "What does my Lord say to His servant?"
