[Jesus] said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds" (Luke 24:38)?
Our Father in heaven, You are a God of promise, and all of Your promises are trustworthy and true. We know that God is not human, that He should lie, not a human being, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and then not act? Does He promise and not fulfill (Numbers 23:19)?
And yet we struggle so much with doubt, and anxiety, and unbelief! Forgive us for limiting You. For staying within the "safe" confines of our puny human understanding.
Open our minds to know what it means that You are God. Take us to the place in our faith where we can exclaim, like the prophet Jeremiah, “Ah, Sovereign Lord, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for You" (Jeremiah 32:17).
Father, You spoke clearly to the issue of doubt through the prophet Isaiah, "This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: '...In quietness and trust is your strength'" (Isaiah 30:15). Help us not to be like the stubborn ones who "would have none of it."
Thank You for the patient instruction we see in our Lord's response to doubting disciples: "Look at My hands and My feet. It is I Myself! Touch Me and see...” When He had said this, He showed them His hands and feet (Luke 24:39-40).
Oh Father, when we are troubled, when we doubt, help us to hear the gentle encouragement in our Savior's words, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?" And when all our expectations are dashed, and our world is falling apart, help us to look up and see His hands and His feet. Help us to reach out in faith and touch the evidence of Your love.
