Day 7: The language of security
Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under His power, and that He had come from God and was returning to God; so He got up from the meal, took off His outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash His disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around Him (John 13:3-5).
Sovereign God, You are the high and exalted One— He who lives forever whose name is holy, the One who has declared, “I live in a high and holy place, but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite...” (Isaiah 57:15).
You sent Your Son, from Your high and holy place, to live with us, to show us who You are, and to make You known not only as God, but also as "our Father": No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is Himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made Him known (John 1:18).
In making You known, our Lord showed us, among many other great things, the security that is found in You— an unshakeable security with nothing to prove, nothing to fear. He showed us a security that is free to love, free to serve, free to honor God with a contrite heart and a lowly spirit— an unshakeable security that led the Lord of all to wash the feet of humans.
Our Father and our Lord, teach us to know you. May the prayer and the yearning of the apostle Paul be ours: "I want to know Christ..." (Philippians 3:10). And as we grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18), grow us also in a new and deeper realization and application of our security in You.
Make us fluent, not just in the "theoretical" language of security, but in the practical truth that You are our God, our Fortress, our Rock, our Refuge, our Defender, our Protector, our Provider, our Shepherd— in short, our All. And as we learn Christ, teach us the humility that comes from being anchored in You.
Help us, in the example of our Lord, to honor and esteem others with acts of genuine love and service. Open our eyes Lord, to see the "unwashed feet" along our path.
