Day 7: Stay awake

Blessed are those whom the Lord find watching

Then [Jesus] returned to His disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch (stay awake) with Me for one hour?” He asked Peter. “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:40-41).

You Lord, have given the wish to pray,

the longing wish which now I feel.

But oh I know not what to say.

I would, but cannot, Lord,

reveal the load my fainting spirits bear,

or tell you all my wants in prayer.

Do you not Lord, my trouble see,

my sore unprofitable pain?

A thousand times I bow the knee,

approach you with my lips in vain.

Present with lifted hands and eyes,

a heartless, lifeless sacrifice.

A thousand times overwhelmed with woe,

I groan impatient at your stay,

ready to let the promise go,

ready to cast my shield away.

The fruitless labour to forbear

and fold my arms in sad despair.

Jesus regard you supplicant,

your needy, tempted follower here.

and now supply my desperate want 

and send me down the Comforter.

The Spirit of ceaseless prayer impart

and fix you Agent in my heart.
