Day 7: The day of good news
The men who had leprosy reached the edge of the camp, entered one of the tents and ate and drank. Then they took silver, gold and clothes... Then they said to each other, “What we’re doing is not right. This is a day of good news and we are keeping it to ourselves... Let’s go at once and report this to the royal palace.” (2 Kings 7:8,9).
Great are You Lord, and most worthy of praise; Your greatness no one can fathom (Psalm 145:3). It is Your sovereign hand that upholds, and guides, and plans the course of human history. But every so often You pull back the veil, and give us a glimpse of Your mighty hand at work causing all things to move as You will.
We see this in the case of four men with leprosy who lived on the outside of the city of Samaria according to the quarantine rules of the day. The city had been under siege by the Syrian army for some time, and was threatened by an engulfing famine.
The four outcasts little knew that their own desperate circumstances, their careful analysis, and their voluntary decision would be used of God to deliver Samaria. All they knew was that logical study of their options led them to the Syrian camp. They found it abandoned, and were able to help themselves to food, clothing, and a wealth of abandoned treasure (2 Kings 7:1-8).
In the physical world, four desperate men seemingly stumbled onto an abandoned enemy camp. But in the supernatural realm, You had caused the Arameans to hear the sound of chariots and horses and a great army... so they got up and fled in the dusk... they left the camp as it was and ran for their lives. (2 Kings 7:6,7).
And in the end these four men, from reasons of conscience and fear of punishment, decided to report their findings to the authorities (2 Kings 7:8,9). Thus the relief was fulfilled according to the word of the Lord the prophet Elisha had declared in the midst of the raging famine: “Hear the word of the Lord. This is what the Lord says..." (2 Kings 7:1).
Help us to apply the lessons from this account— first never to doubt Your power, even in the "impossible," lest, like the unbelieving officer, we are barred from Your amazing bounty (2 Kings 7:2). And then, keep us always mindful that You work in the everyday, ordinary circumstances of our lives— even when they seem dire— and that as we obey, and do what is right, You will accomplish Your purpose in all things.
Only, Lord, teach us to act in love. Teach us not to keep the day of good news to ourselves, but to share— not in fear of punishment, but in gratitude for Your great love and for Your blessings. And in love and compassion for those around us.
