Day 6: Trusting through uncertainty

The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you...” So Abram went, as the Lord had told him… (Genesis 12:1, 4).

O Lord God eternal, You are our only firm foundation, our hope, our anchor, our rock. "I AM your shield," You told Abram, "your very great reward" (Genesis 15:1). And when You unfolded Your plan and the promise You would later seal with a covenant, Abram believed the Lord and He credited it to him as righteousness (Genesis 15:6).

Abram— who eventually became Abraham as part of the covenant promise— trusted You implicitly when You called him away from the familiar into an unknown place and an uncertain future (Genesis 12:1-5). By faith... he... obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going (Hebrews 11:8).

O that we too, would learn that level of trust in You! O that we too, would believe God, and not the wisdom, the conventions, and the perspectives of a world that attaches identity, security, and stability to the borrowed, the transient, and the illusionary.

Lord, we are grateful for the gifts, the benefits, and the countless blessings You give us. We know how crucial they are, not just for our survival, but for the thriving and the flourishing You intended for humans when You fashioned and made the earth... not... to be empty, but... to be inhabited (Isaiah 45:18).

Help us to be wise and prudent stewards over all You provide— the earth and its resources, and all else You provide for our life and livelihood— our families, our communities, our jobs, our organizational and government structures and institutions. But ultimately, Lord, help us to recognize that they are flawed and human, and that it is You, and not these that support and sustain, carry and uphold us.

You call Your church, O God, to come out... and be separate (2 Corinthians 6:17). Give us the willingness to leave all that we have trusted, and believed in, and depended on instead of You. Give us the courage to "go from" the idols that surround us, the false gods that ensnare us, the country that consumes us; and go to the land You will show us— a land not built on human ways and human wisdom, but a city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God (Hebrews 11:10).

Lord, we confess that we struggle with change and upheaval. But help us to obey You and set out in answer to Your call, trusting You through all our uncertainty; knowing that You are a trustworthy Guide. Help us to hear Your reassuring voice, "Do not be afraid. I AM your shield, your exceedingly great reward" (Genesis 15:1 - NKJV).
