Day 6: Light of life

In Jesus was life and that life was the light of all people

When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, “I AM the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).

God of glory, in us shine,

Soul and body, we are Thine;

God of wisdom, love, and might,

Be our strength and burning light;

God of peace and holiness,

Let Thy beauty be on us.*

You, O Lord, are our light and our vison— without You we would be consumed by the darkness: the floodwaters would engulf us, the depths would swallow us up, and the pit would close its mouth over us (Psalm 69:15). But You save us from destruction by Your light of life. And we are not left to find the way alone.

We think of so many promises You have made to Your people through ages past to our day and into eternity; promises to lead, to guide, and to light our way:

In Your unfailing love you will lead the people You have redeemed. In Your strength You will guide them to Your holy dwelling (Exodus 15:13).

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it” (Isaiah 30:21).

I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them (Isaiah 42:15).

This is what the Lord says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls (Jeremiah 6:16).

Ultimately, Lord Jesus, You Yourself came to show us the good way, for You are The Way (John 14:6). For Your Name's sake, You guide us along the right paths (Psalm 23:3). And in Your light, The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of day (Proverbs 4:18).

Lord Jesus, as the darkness deepens around us, we hold on to Your promise that those who follow You will never walk in darkness, but will have light of life. Help us to follow closely. Help us to reflect Your light— to light the way for the lost and the stumbling.
