Day 6: Joy comes with the morning
Weeping may linger for the night but joy comes with the morning (Psalm 30:5 - NRSVUE).
All the mysteries in our lives will be revealed someday. They will not always be perplexing to us. “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.”
We often do not see now how this or that trying experience can do any good, but later on the mystery will be explained. “For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it” (Hebrews 12:11 – ESV).
The plow cuts mercilessly through the field. From the perspective of the sod, it seems only destructive. But afterward a harvest of golden grain waves—where all seemed ruined at first. It is only afterward that many of God’s providences can be clearly understood. It takes time for the full meaning to be wrought out.
We do not know in the days of sorrow what shining blessing will be revealed as the final outcome. We do not see in midwinter the roses that are hidden under the snow, which after a while will unfold their beauty.
~ James R. Miller ~ Afterward You Will Understand, pub. 1909
All the way my Savior leads me,
Cheers each winding path I tread,
Gives me grace for every trial,
Feeds me with the living Bread.
Though my weary steps may falter
And my soul athirst may be,
Gushing from the Rock before me,
Lo! A spring of joy I see;
Gushing from the Rock before me,
Lo! A spring of joy I see.
