Day 6: Master Builder
Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain (Psalm 127:1).
Creator God of matchless power and might, the universe was formed at [Your] command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible (Hebrews 11:3). You spoke into darkness, void, and chaos with unsearchable wisdom, resplendent light, and impeccable precision.
You laid the earth's foundations, marked off dimensions, stretched a measuring line across it, set its footings, and laid its cornerstone—all while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy (Job 38:4-7). In Your perfectly calibrated design You measured the waters in the hollow of [Your] hand... marked off the heavens with the breadth of [Your] hand...held the dust of the earth in a basket...weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance (Isaiah 40:12).
Nothing was arbitrary, accidental, or haphazard: You set the heavens in place, You marked out the horizon on the face of the deep, You established the clouds above and fixed securely the fountains of the deep, You gave the sea its boundary so the waters would not overstep [Your] command, and You marked out the foundations of the earth” (Proverbs 8:22-29).
And In Your infinite wisdom, You set up the rules and laws that govern everything—time and space, boundaries and distance—and all that is and ever will be—in the physical and material, spiritual and metaphysical—and in unknown habitations and dimensions: visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers (Colossians 1:16).
You, O Lord are the God—that Master Designer and Builder—who teaches us about tested cornerstones, and sure foundations, and wise building strategies (Isaiah 28:16, Isaiah 33:6, Matthew 7:24-25). You are the God without whom we cannot build, for Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain (Psalm 127:1).
Sovereign Lord, You have shown us the futility of false foundations—the tyranny of greed and grasping, the stranglehold of possessions, the relentless drive of vain ambition. You give us instead a blueprint for building that includes resting, embracing godly priorities and maintaining balance: In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—for He grants sleep to those He loves (Psalm 127:2).
Teach us to build our relationships, our homes and families, our communities, and our lives on the wisdom of Your plans. We remember Your promise from of old: The Lord is exalted, for He dwells on high…He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the Lord is the key to this treasure (Isaiah 33:5-6).
