Day 5: We look for light

O send out Your light and Your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to Your holy hill and to Your dwelling (Psalm 43:3 - NRSVUE).

Isaiah 59:4, 7-15:

No one calls for justice;

no one pleads a case with integrity.

They rely on empty arguments, they utter lies;

they conceive trouble and give birth to evil.

Their deeds are evil deeds,

and acts of violence are in their hands.

Their feet rush into sin;

they are swift to shed innocent blood.

They pursue evil schemes;

acts of violence mark their ways.

The way of peace they do not know;

there is no justice in their paths.

They have turned them into crooked roads;

no one who walks along them will know peace.

So justice is far from us,

and righteousness does not reach us.

We look for light, but all is darkness;

for brightness, but we walk in deep shadows.

Like the blind we grope along the wall,

feeling our way like people without eyes.

At midday we stumble as if it were twilight;

among the strong, we are like the dead...

We look for justice, but find none;

for deliverance, but it is far away.

For our offenses are many in your sight,

and our sins testify against us...

rebellion and treachery against the Lord,

turning our backs on our God,

inciting revolt and oppression,

uttering lies our hearts have conceived.

So justice is driven back,

and righteousness stands at a distance;

truth has stumbled in the streets,

honesty cannot enter.

Truth is nowhere to be found,

and whoever shuns evil becomes a prey.

O Lord, we recognize so well the society in chaos described by the prophet Isaiah — the widespread confusion, lies, distortions, violence, bloodshed, and injustice. It is tempting to cry out in despair, "We look for light, but all is darkness" (vs. 9). But we remember the truth You have given us for these times: God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all (1 John 1:5).

And You have given us Your promise for all ages: But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come (John 16:13).

So as we walk through this turbulent world, we pray like the psalmist, teach me to do Your will, for You are my God; may Your good Spirit lead me on level ground (Psalm 143:10).

Holy Spirit, faithful Guide,

Ever near the Christian’s side,

Gently lead us by the hand,

Pilgrims in a desert land;

Weary souls fore’er rejoice,

While they hear that sweetest voice,

Whispering softly, “Wanderer, come!

Follow Me, I’ll guide thee home.”

Ever present, truest Friend,

Ever near Thine aid to lend,

Leave us not to doubt and fear,

Groping on in darkness drear.

When the storms are raging sore,

Hearts grow faint, and hopes give o’er–

Whisper softly, “Wanderer, come!

Follow Me, I’ll guide thee home.”
