Day 3: A covering for sin

The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them (Genesis 3:21).

fig leaves

...The LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

This was a very significant Gospel action. The Lord took away from Adam and Eve the withered fig leaves, but put on them the skins of animals, to show, in symbol, that we are covered with the Sacrifice of Christ.

The giving up of a life yielded a better covering than the growth of Nature—and so, today, the death of Christ yields us a better covering than we could ever find in anything that grew of our poor fallen nature.

~ C.H. Spurgeon

Sovereign Lord, Father of comfort and compassion, thank You for the grace that anticipated our dire need and met us in our hapless ignorance.

From the first humans' disobedience in Your perfectly created world (Genesis 3), sin has so distorted our vision that we see ourselves fully clothed when we are indeed wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked (Revelation 3:17).

Your word, like a mirror (James 1:23-25), reveals our pitiful dysmorphia, our "withered fig leaves" of self-trust, and striving, our false sense of our own goodness, and our worship of gods made to our liking. But in mercy, You offer us a full covering for our sin by the sacrifice of Christ, for under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sins (Hebrews 9:22 - ESV).

Lord, open our eyes to see—to accept with gratitude the grace that covers all our sin. Thank You for the purifying blood of the only Savior who can remove the taint, distortion, and shame of sin.

Jesus, lover of my soul,

Let me to Thy bosom fly,

While the nearer waters roll,

While the tempest still is high.

Hide me, O my Savior, hide,

Till the storm of life is past;

Safe into the haven guide;

Oh, receive my soul at last.

Other refuge have I none,

Hangs my helpless soul on Thee;

Leave, ah! leave me not alone,

Still support and comfort me.

All my trust on Thee is stayed,

All my help from Thee I bring;

Cover my defenseless head

With the shadow of Thy wing.

Wilt Thou not regard my call?

Wilt Thou not accept my prayer?

Lo! I sink, I faint, I fall—

Lo! on Thee I cast my care.

Reach me out Thy gracious hand!

While I of Thy strength receive,

Hoping against hope I stand,

Dying, and behold, I live.

Thou, O Christ, art all I want,

More than all in Thee I find;

Raise the fallen, cheer the faint,

Heal the sick, and lead the blind.

Just and holy is Thy Name,

Source of all true righteousness;

Thou art evermore the same,

Thou art full of truth and grace.

Plenteous grace with Thee is found,

Grace to cover all my sin;

Let the healing streams abound;

Make and keep me pure within.

Thou of life the fountain art,

Freely let me take of Thee;

Spring Thou up within my heart;

Rise to all eternity.
