Day 3: My ears You have opened
Jesus said...“Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God” (John 8:47).
Our Father, You have assured us that we are Yours if we believe in the Son You sent us: No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also (1 John 2:23). But You show us that to believe in You is not simply “head knowledge” or intellectual assent.
Throughout Scripture, You have shown us that it isn’t the exterior symbols of religion that You are interested in, but our obedience and surrender to You: “Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams” (1 Samuel 15:22).
The Lord Jesus Himself, in whom the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form (Colossians 2:9) showed Himself to be completely obedient unto death, even the death of the cross (Philippians 2:8). The complete nature of His surrender is revealed in His prayerful declaration— using words inspired by the Holy Spirit to the psalmist centuries before:
“Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but a body You prepared for Me; with burnt offerings and sin offerings You were not pleased. Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about Me in the scroll— I have come to do Your will, My God’” (Hebrews 10:5-7; Psalm 40:6-8).
Lord, You ask no less of us. You have told us that a life that belongs to You is distinguished by obedience to You: “My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand. My Father who has given them to Me is greater than all. No one can snatch them out of My Father’s hand. I and the Father are one” (John 10:27-30 – Berean Standard Bible).
We know we cannot follow on our own. But You have given us Your Spirit to guide us (Galatians 5:16).
Open our ears, Lord! Open our minds to receive. Let us not be among the rebellious who remain in darkness— those who are ever hearing but never understanding (Matthew 13:14). Let us not be among those of whom You say, “You do not believe because you are not My sheep” (John 10:26).
Help us to be like our Savior, who said, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work" (John 4:34); who said, "The Sovereign Lord has opened My ears; I have not been rebellious, I have not turned away. I offered My back to those who beat Me, My cheeks to those who pulled out My beard; I did not hide My face from mocking and spitting” (Isaiah 50:5-6).
For us, He did this, so that we can belong to You. Let such love compel us (2 Corinthians 5:14). Let it lead us to obey in gratitude and humble surrender.
