Daily Affirmations - Day 3 - The Promise of Dawn - Why, Lord?
Day 3: Why, Lord?
Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Why, Lord, why have You brought trouble on this people? Is this why You sent me? Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and You have not rescued Your people at all” (Exodus 5:22-23).
Heavenly Father, in the pages of Scripture, You have revealed Yourself to us, documenting the details of Your grace to humanity from before time, through every age, and into eternity. From everlasting to everlasting Your unfailing love is with us.
But in an imperfect world marred by sin and suffering, we often do not understand Your ways. Our human experience is limited by our scope, vision, and understanding, all of which are finite, fleeting, and flawed.
You know our limitations, and in Your living word, You have taken great care to show us Your goodness, Your mercy, Your compassion, and Your constant watchful care over us. And You ask us to trust You— to surrender to Your perfect purpose.
We confess that we struggle mightily with this. Your times seem long, Your ways strange, Your answers puzzling. And often it seems that the waiting is longer, the distresses stronger, the more that we pray.
Lord! Increase our faith! Let not our vision fail in the dark of night, so we lose sight of the promised dawn. You have shown us that when Your ancient people thought themselves beaten and defeated by the power, the pressure, and the troubles that piled on; when they were overwhelmed by unreachable targets, impossible demands, and unattainable resources, You were at work in their great deliverance (Exodus 5:1-Exodus 6:8).
Father, when like Moses we cry out, "Why, Lord?" (Exodus 5:22), remind us that the promise of dawn is rooted in "Who", not "Why". Impress on our hearts the assurance You gave to Moses, "I AM the LORD" (Exodus 6:2). Carve on our minds the knowledge that the commission, the journey, the work, and the outcomes are all anchored in the power and purpose of the self-existent God, the One who declared, "I AM WHO I AM" (Exodus 3:14).
