Day 3: Sovereign Lord, You alone know
The hand of the Lord was on me, and He brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” I said, “Sovereign Lord, You alone know” (Ezekiel 37:1-3).
O Sovereign Lord, You made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for You (Jeremiah 32:17). You are the only One who can create from nothing— You give life and breath and everything else (Acts 17:25).
But nothing You do is haphazard or capricious— You work all things in accordance with Your will: As [You] have planned, so it will be, as [You] have purposed, so it will happen... [Yours] is the plan determined for the whole world; [Yours] is the hand stretched out over all nations (Isaiah 14:24, 26).
Your will, O God, is good and perfect (Romans 12:2). Even in the questions, the riddles, the perplexities of human life, Your way is sure, Your wisdom flawless. You determine all times and seasons (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8), and in You all paradoxes of sovereign plan and human choice are resolved clearly and conclusively.
You are sovereign over the spans and cycles of peoples, nations, civilizations. You know their times, their birth, their end. You are sovereign even over death, with supreme power to orchestrate resurgence and rebirth. You alone can cause dry bones to live (Ezekiel 37:1-14), for You are the God of resurrection power, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did (Romans 4:17 - NKJV).
Yet Lord, we do not know the mysteries of Your times, Your methods, or Your movements. Keep us from pride, presumption and foolish speculation. We know that You can do all things, but we do not know what You purpose, or when, or how, You choose to unveil the details of Your masterplan.
Help us to defer to Your sovereign will as we face the uncertainties, the challenges, and the tough questions around us. Give us the attitude of heart like the prophet Ezekiel, to simply say, "Sovereign Lord, You alone know," and then wait for Your guidance and Your instruction.
You have directed us to test and approve Your will (Romans 12:2); to ask according to Your will (1 John 5:14); and to pray for Your will to be done on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10). Help us to focus only on seeking You, completing whatever tasks You have assigned to us, and trusting You to unfold each step of Your perfect will according to Your perfect time.
Help us to remember that Yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever— You are exalted as head over all (1 Chronicles 29:11).
