Day 3: The Lord will sustain you

Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken (Psalm 55:22).

Cast thy burden upon the Lord,

who ever sustains thee,

who never will suffer the righteous to fall,

and is at thy right hand.

Thy mercy, Lord, is great,

and far above the heav’ns.

Let none be made ashamed,

that wait upon Thee.

~ Julius Schubring (1846)

Cast Your burden upon the Lord — Whoever You are that art burdened, and whatever the burden is; whatever affliction God sends to you; all your trials and troubles, your crosses and distresses, your cares and fears, and all your affairs, lay upon the shoulders of the Almighty, and commit to Him, by faith and prayer, with a confident expectation of a good issue.

Whatever blessings God has given you to enjoy, commit to His custody, and use to His glory; and particularly commit the keeping of your soul to Him. Whatever it is that you desire that God should give you, leave it to Him to give it you in His own way and time.

Throw, or cast, upon the Lord your care; to which St. Peter refers, (1 Peter 5:7). Care is a burden to many, which depresses their spirits.

This burden we should learn to cast upon God by faith and prayer, committing our ways and works to Him, and saying, Let Him do what seems to Him good, and I shall be satisfied. To cast our burden upon the Lord, is to stay ourselves on His providence and promise, and to be very easy in the assurance that all shall work for good.

He will sustain you— both support or bear you up, and supply your wants. He has not promised immediately to free us from the trouble which gives rise to our cares and fears, but H will strengthen our spirits by His Spirit, so that they shall not sink under the trial, and He will provide that we be not tempted above what we are able, and that as our day is our strength shall be.

He himself will nourish you, will supply your every need, according to His riches in glory (Philippians 4:19). He will give you all things that pertain to life, as well as those that pertain to godliness. He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved... Though He may, for a season, allow them to be shaken, yet He will not allow them to be utterly overwhelmed.

~ Joseph Benson on Psalm 55:22 (Slightly edited).
