Day 3: Those who thirst

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:13-14).

Lord Jesus, from Your infinite, unsearchable riches of knowledge and wisdom You taught us, Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be filled (Matthew 5:6).

A Samaritan woman found this to be true when she came to a well with a thirst she keenly felt but little understood. There she was—trapped in cycles of constant drawing— again and again— from broken cisterns of habit, routine, and familiarity—her fast-emptying springs of comfort, support, survival and self-protection.

And there You were, Lord, offering her what she instantly recognized as the genuine source of joy and peace her soul craved, so that she immediately and spontaneously responded, "Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water" (John 4:15).

But You continued to draw her step by step, into abandonment of all that leaked and left her thirsty— her history, her insecurity, her dependency, her ancestry (John 4:11, 16-25). Until finally she left her jar behind and hurried to bring others with her into the joy of new possibility (John 4:28-30, 39-42).

O Lord, the Samaritan woman is the example You give us for our own response to healing from broken, empty lives. According to Your unfailing word of promise, the water You give will become in [those who receive it], a spring of water welling up to eternal life (John 4:14). And You have promised to make us witnesses of Your grace:

“Let anyone who is thirsty come to Me and drink. Whoever believes in Me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them” (John 7:37-38).

Lord, let the overflow of Your Spirit in our lives indeed be the testimony of Your grace and healing. Let it draw others to lay down the empty way of life handed down... from [human ancestry] (1 Peter 1:18-19). Let it draw them to abandon their own cisterns they have dug broken cisterns that cannot hold water, and come to the spring, [the fountain] of living water (Jeremiah 2:13).
