Day 2: What God has promised
Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful (Hebrews 10:23).
The beautiful and encouraging hymn, What God Has Promised came from the "many a burden, many a care" in the life of Annie Johnson Flint. The story of this Vineland, New Jersey poet and hymn-writer, is a living, authentic testimony of the message of faith, grace, and endurance in the hymns she wrote, including, O There's Many a Thorn on the Jesus Way and He Giveth More Grace. What God Has Promised
~ Annie J. Flint ~ bef. 1902
God has not promised skies always blue,
Flower-strewn pathways all our lives through;
God has not promised sun without rain,
Joy without sorrow, peace without pain.
Refrain:
But God has promised strength for the day,
Rest for the labor, light for the way,
Grace for the trials, help from above,
Unfailing kindness, undying love.
God has not promised we shall not know
Toil and temptation, trouble and woe;
He has not told us we shall not bear
Many a burden, many a care.
God has not promised smooth roads and wide,
Swift, easy travel, needing no guide;
Never a mountain rocky and steep,
Never a river turbid and deep.
