Day 1: Everyday miracles

In a recent conversation, a friend and I discovered that we shared in common a not-so- apparent physical "limitation." The discovery surfaced incidentally as we discussed an unrelated topic, and we both chuckled as we exchanged stories about some of the humorous and frustrating challenges our "limitation" creates.

I shared with her a prayer I often pray as I struggle with a few basic tasks others may find very easy:

“Lord, You made me (fearfully and wonderfully - (Psalm 139:14), and You know how I am abled ad equipped, and You know how I am not. So You know that unless You help me, I will never be able to...)."

Time and again, I have breathed my "Thank You!" as things have clicked into place (often literally!), or another solution has emerged in answer to this prayer. And each time, God definitively rules out the "coincidence factor" so that I would not carelessly and ungratefully dismiss His kindness.

Later, as I thought about the conversation with my friend, I reflected on these "everyday miracles." My limitations and hers are not as obvious or as serious as other challenges in the vast realm of "mortal ills." So my miracles may not earn, in the eyes of most, a place among the breathtaking miracles Jesus did: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised… (Matthew 11:5).

But for everyone who has experienced the power of God through the blessing of weakness, miracles come in all forms and degrees. We have seen the undeniable results of a cry of "Help, Lord!" raised to heaven.

Many of us would rather live in strength—our strength. God desires us instead to live by His power. In so doing, we experience a great blessing we would not otherwise realize. Author James Miller, in his work, the Blessing of Weakness, explains it this way:

We need only to make sure of one thing—that we do indeed bring our weakness to Christ and lean on Him in simple faith. This is the vital link in getting the blessing.

Weakness itself is a burden; it is chains upon our limbs. If we try to carry it alone, we shall only fail. But if we lay it on the strong Son of God, and let Him carry us and our burden, going on quietly and firmly in the way of duty, He will make our very weakness a secret source of strength.

He will not take the weakness from us—that is not His promise—but He will so fill it with His own power that we shall be strong, more than conquerors, able to do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Romans 8:37; Philippians 4:13)!
