Day 7: The Lord richly blesses

Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid

The same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on Him, for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (Romans 10:12-13).

If men had been as God created them, they would have needed no saving. Adam in the garden wanted no salvation, he was perfect, pure, clean, holy, and acceptable before God.

He... stood as the representative for all the human race, and when he... transgressed against God, he needed a Saviour and we, his offspring through his sin, are born into this world, each of us needing a Saviour...

We need not talk of Adam’s sins. We have our own... and God knows they are enough. Holy Scripture tells us that we all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23), and conscience bears witness to the same truth.

We have all broken the great commands of God, and... the just God is bound in justice to punish us for the sins we have committed. [Even in our own flawed human systems, justice demands consequences for wrong.]

Because we have broken the divine law, and are subject to divine wrath, we stand in need of mercy. If we would be happy, [and] dwell in heaven with God for ever, we must be saved.

"Being saved" means two things. It means escaping from the punishment of sins... and it means escaping from the habit of sin... God finds [humans] breaking His law, He says, “I forgive you, I will not punish you. I have punished Christ instead of you—you shall be saved.”

But that is only half the work. He [also] says, ”I will not let you go on sinning as [before]; I will give you a new heart, which shall subdue your evil habits. So where you have been the slave of sin, you shall be free to serve Me... I will give you grace to do it..."

So, “What must I do to be saved?” The answer of [Scripture] is this—”Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved...”

What is meant by calling upon the name of the Lord? [It] is to worship God... Whoever... is enabled by grace to worship God, in God’s way— with a pure heart fervently, looking for acceptance through the atonement of Christ, and meekly casting himself upon the mercy of God, shall be saved.

So stands the promise... Whoever prays to God through Christ, with sincere prayer shall be saved. Christ Jesus the Son of God, became a man; He was “born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried.” He did this to save sinners such as we are. Will you believe this? Will you trust your soul to it?

Will you bow down on your knees, and cry, “Lord, have mercy upon me, a sinner, not for anything I have done, or can do, but for His dear sake, whose blood streamed from His hands and feet, in whom alone I trust?”
